Hyundai Mighty Electric now available
Following its preview at the Brisbane Truck Show last May, Hyundai has launched their Mighty Electric light-duty truck, providing pricing, warranty and dealership availability information, along with the EV truck’s basic specs and standard features.
“The Hyundai Mighty Electric makes for the ideal last mile or back-to-base light-duty commercial truck, for businesses wanting to reduce their driving emissions,” said HMCA Chief Operating Officer, John Kett.
“The Mighty Electric is best suited to urban environments, with its zero driving emissions, a quiet electric motor and high energy efficiency at lower speeds. The smoothness and quietness of operation will help reduce driver fatigue and enhance road safety.”
Priced from $150,000 plus ORCs, the Mighty Electric is backed by a 5 Year/200,000km vehicle warranty and 8 Year/400,000km battery warranty. Servicing intervals are 12 months or 20,000km (whichever comes first) and service pricing has been calculated out to 12 years/240,000km. Hyundai says standard scheduled servicing costs for the first five years/100,000km amount to less than $4,300.
Measuring 6400mm long and riding on a 3300m wheelbase, the Mighty Electric has a payload rating of 4050kg (less the weight of a fitted body) and a GVM of 7300kg. That means a Light Rigid licence will be required in most states and territories, although getting an engineer to re-rate the GVM down would allow the truck to be driven on a car licence.
For now, the Mighty Electric is only being offered as a cab chassis, with a Hyundai Genuine Accessories alloy tray available at additional cost. Hyundai says a Pantech body will be available in the future.
Powering the Mighty Electric is a permanent magnet synchronous motor generating 120kW and 320Nm. Drive is to the rear axle via a single-speed reduction gear with a final drive ratio of 5.375:1. Maximum speed is 100km/h.
The truck’s 114.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack is described as class-leading for a cab chassis and provides up to 200km of range when the truck is fitted with a tray and loaded to its maximum GVM. According to Hyundai, their own range test covered “typical Australian urban conditions” and was done with the air conditioning on.
Using an 800V DC fast charger with a CCS 2 combo port provides 8 to 100 per cent charge at 100kW in approximately 71 minutes. For quicker turnarounds, Hyundai says a 20-minute fast charge could add around 100km of range. The Mighty Electric will also accept up to 6.6kW of AC power.
To improve the electric truck’s efficiency, two-stage regenerative braking allows up to 33 per cent of braking energy to be recovered, simply by lifting off the accelerator pedal. Stage 1 provides up to 0.07g of decelerative force, while the stronger Stage 2 generates up to 0.14g. Front and rear drum service brakes are air actuated.
The Mighty Electric also features an ‘ECO’ mode which reduces electricity consumption by limiting power output, thus maximising range for longer drives where full power is not required. When the battery charge depletes, the battery management system works to help the truck reach its destination for charging.
In terms of safety, the Mighty Electric comes with dual front airbags, traction control, a rear-view camera and the Hyundai SmartSense Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Forward Collision-avoidance Assist in the ADAS uses both the forward-facing camera and radar to detect cars and pedestrians ahead, applying the brakes if a collision is imminent. Lane keep assist and lane departure warning are also standard.
Convenience and comfort features include cruise control, hill start assist, auto headlights, LED DRLs, heated exterior mirrors, electro-hydraulic power steering (backed by a tilt and tele adjustable column), a suspension seat for the driver, shift-by-wire transmission control, 24V power outlets and storage binnacles.
A 7.0-inch colour instrument screen is complemented with a centrally mounted 7.0-inch centre infotainment touchscreen that also serves as the rear-view camera display.
Available in Creamy White or Hyper Silver colours, with grey cloth interior trim common to both, the Mighty Electric is available from a selected number of Hyundai Truck dealers across the country. The launch network included Peninsula Hyundai Truck and Bus (NSW), Adtrans Hyundai Trucks (VIC), Hyundai Truck Centre Canberra (ACT), WA Hyundai Trucks (WA) and Gold Coast Hyundai Trucks (QLD). Contact your nearest Hyundai Trucks dealer to see if they’ve been added to the network, along with the latest pricing info and tray/body availability.
