UK company reveals new lightweight enclosed car trailer
British trailer manufacturer, Brian James Trailers (BJT), has unveiled its new, lightweight enclosed car trailer – the Race Transporter 7 (RT7). While created primarily for transporting competition cars, the RT7’s lighter weight compared to the RT6 makes it ideal for hauling modern EVs, along with the latest prestige and luxury cars.
Approximately 200kg lighter than the equivalent-sized RT6, BJT’s new RT7 meets the growing demand for lighter trailers due to cars getting heavier, along with an increased focus on fuel efficiency - for both cost control and environmental reasons. With vehicle weights growing and the heavy nature of modern EVs and hybrids, BJT believes the RT7 is the future of the high-end vehicle logistics industry.
Available in tri-axle and dual-axle form (load capacity up to 2,235kg), along with extra height versions and a choice of black or white bodywork, the RT7 creates what BJT calls a new category of super-premium enclosed car transporter trailers.
“With exceptional specification and a lighter, stronger, smarter design, the RT7 takes enclosed car transport to a new level,” says Lewis James, CEO of BJT. “Whether for supercar exotics, motorsport, classics or vehicle logistics, the RT7 is the ultimate choice.”
Advanced Technology
Cutting-edge technology on the RT7 includes an industry-first electric actuator for the rear door and tilt bed. Operable from inside the trailer or with a wireless remote, this removes the need for manual handling of the door and operating fiddly catches. This also provides the trailer with an extremely low ground clearance, but optional assistor ramps are available to cater for ultra-low exotics and racing cars.
A new electric winch with synthetic rope and wireless operation is lighter and less damaging to both hands and bodywork than traditional steel wire. The standard 4,500lb winch can be upgraded to a heavy-duty 9,500lb version, with other options including a tyre rack, additional storage compartments, an awning, reversing camera, solar panels and more.
LED lighting on the rear, front and side is standard for the RT7, as are side-mounted reversing lights. Rear loading lights come on automatically when the back door opens.
Full-length interior strip lighting is standard and can be powered from either the trailer’s onboard 12V battery or the tow vehicle. The onboard battery also powers the rear door actuator, tilt-bed actuator and the electric winch.
The battery comes with a charger, Bluetooth connectivity (to view the current charge level from your phone) and a visible LED indicator to ensure that battery charge levels are always known.
Clean, Contemporary Design
The RT7 has what’s described as a contemporary and premium design inside and out, with flush-fitting, body-coloured aluminium side door trims that improve both form and function compared to old-fashioned plastic and rubber door trims. The result is a much cleaner look.
Much effort has gone into the front and rear styling to give the RT7 an understated, stylish and premium feel. BJT say the design was inspired by modern luxury cars and premium motorhomes.
The RT7’s fibreglass composite bodywork is the latest development from a longstanding partnership between BJT and fibreglass specialists, Quantum Mouldings. The RT7 uses knowledge gained from the development and production of the Ultima RS sports car that is bodied by Quantum Mouldings.
Composite flooring is new, much lighter and stronger than a traditional deck board and also provides more grip. While it’s more expensive than deck-board, the composite flooring is another demonstration of the RT7 lifting the standard for enclosed car trailers.
A spare wheel cover and diamond-cut anthracite alloy wheels are standard, which is another industry first. Plain silver alloys and steel wheels are no-cost options, while a dual spare set-up is available.
Unveiled in the UK in January, RT7 pricing starts from £25,550 plus VAT (AU$48,500 approx., direct conversion). Australian release of the RT7 has yet to be confirmed, but BJT’s Australian importers do offer the ‘Race Shuttle’ and ‘Race Sport’ enclosed trailers in a variety of sizes and configurations. A wide range of open car trailers, plant trailers, tippers and multi-purpose trailers are also available from BJT Australia dealers in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia.
